Chapter 9

New Theories

One of the paramedics broke an ammonia capsule under Alan Krisp's nose. The strong, unpleasant odor made Krisp push the capsule away. His eyes fluttered open and he looked around without quite focusing. "Where is he?" Krisp asked woozily. "Where did he go?"

Frank leaned down over the shoulder of the paramedic. "Who are you talking about?" he asked. "Where did who go?"

"The ... the man who hit me. The man who — " Suddenly his eyes opened wide. "Where's Bob? Is he all right?"

"He's right here, Mr. Krisp," offered Joe. "He's starting to come around, too. He'll be all right. But finish what you were saying," he insisted. "Who hit you?"

"I ... I don't know," he said, gingerly touching the bump on the back of his head.

"Think," urged Frank. "Tell us what happened. Start from the beginning."

"I decided to take the day off, so I called in sick," Krisp admitted. "I left the house early and had breakfast out. Then I did some shopping for my trip." He looked up at Frank and Joe. "I'm going on vacation next week."

"To Rio de Janeiro?" interrupted Joe.

"No," he replied, surprised by the question. "Actually, I was thinking of Rio, but I changed my mind and decided to go to Hawaii.

"Anyway," Alan Krisp continued, "at about noon, I drove over to Bob's house. He usually comes home for lunch at about that time, and I wanted to discuss my hotel reservations with him. You see, Bob is a travel agent as well as an old friend, and I booked my trip through him."

Frank and Joe looked at each other, embarrassed by their long string of mistakes. Alan Krisp and Robert Blane didn't appear to be the saboteurs. But if they had nothing to do with the case, then why had they been knocked out?

"Let's get back to what happened here," said Frank. "You didn't see who hit you?"

Alan Krisp got to his feet slowly, helped by Frank and Joe. "Well, after we went over the details of my trip, Bob invited me to stay for lunch," Krisp said, trying to remember. "We took our sandwiches into the living room and Bob turned on the radio. Then we sat down to eat. Before I knew it, I felt a conk on the head and that was it — until now."

"The back door lock was tampered with," said Joe. Then he asked, "You didn't hear anything?"

"Not a thing," Krisp replied. "I guess the sound of the radio covered any sound the intruder made."

Blane was conscious and on his feet by this time, but his memory was the same as Krisp's. His friend had been sitting off to the side and behind him, and 'he had been unaware that Krisp had been hit on the head.

"Has anything been stolen?" asked Frank. He wondered if the attack was part of a robbery and had nothing to do with the sabotage at the CompuCar factory.

"I've still got my wallet," said Blane.

"Me, too," echoed Krisp. "And I'm carrying a lot of cash.
